KU vs OSU | Marching Jayhawks

It was another gorgeous day for shooting at Memorial Stadium. I began at the Campanile an hour and a half before kickoff to see a performance by the talented Marching Jayhawks’ drumline. Thirty minutes later the Campanile’s bell rang and

the band began their march down the hill. Concert on the hill, “Hogcalling,” and a second drumline performance underneath the stadium completed the usual pre, pre-game ritual.

Pre-game commenced and the band sprinted out onto the field. The excitement built as the players ran out onto the field to kick off what would ultimately be a very close game.

Just in time for Halloween, Dr. Smith chose “Wizard of Oz” as the theme for the halftime performance. Where you usually saw three drum majors directing the band and a baton twirler performing, you noticed a tin man, a lion, a scarecrow and Dorothy, instead. Where you usually saw the color guard performing routines with their flags you saw the Wicked Witch’s monkeys running around instead. And finally, a bejeweled Baby Jay as Glenda the Good Witch.

The Marching Jayhawks sounded great and looked just as great performing a tribute to a traditional piece of Kansas history.

Here are a “handful” of my favorites from the day, enjoy!
