During the last weekend of April I was asked to work as the film set photographer for a training film called “The Greatest Responsibility.” It was amazing to see how this film crew worked together and how everyone involved was stepping up to do their part and make this happen. It takes an enormous amount
of equipment, preparation, time management, and improvisation to make it all come together.
The first location of my shoot was at a house where they filmed interactions mostly between a dad, a construction worker, and his four-year old son, not to mention the very cute, cooperative puppy. The other two days were located at a live construction site off of 435 across from The Legends in Kansas City. We had to go through safety training ourselves as we were shooting in a building that was only about halfway done. This made getting all the equipment up tricky for the crew and safety precautions had to be taken.
Anytime the cameras were not rolling, that was my time to work. It is difficult to get the ‘straight out of the film’ look in photos as those moments happen when the cameras are rolling, when I am not allowed to shoot. However, I had fun working around those moments and, honestly, found it more enjoyable to capture the actions of and interactions between the crew. Everyone can pull up IMDB and look at those ‘screen shots’ from a movie. It is less rare that you get to see the setup and all of the hard work that makes those films possible.
A big thank you to Marc Havener and his crew for letting me work with them for a few days!
